Part of the Operations series on the Mobtag platform.

In short: Tag associations keep reporting honest when the same part number lives in six regions. Stock sites on the map, tied to your data model, let transfers, shrink, and emergency borrows be explained with movements and timestamps—not anecdotes the night before month end.

The failure mode is rarely “we lost count.” It is two competing definitions of place and words in a notes column pretending to be a taxonomy. Stock sites and tags have to be structural—so the “same” filter in month twenty-four still means what procurement thought it meant in month one.

When sites and tags drift

  • The map and the live stock view disagree because one was drawn in a review meeting and the other is what the yard actually issued last week.
  • Narrative tags in free text work until you have to run a repeatable report. “That family of kit, sort of” is not a dimension you can sign off in an audit.
  • Same part number, many places in name only—shrink and unreturned hire without a booked line you can defend in a dispute.

Designing tags people will not abandon

  1. Keep the vocabulary short enough to train new starters in a morning—not a fifty-page thesaurus nobody opens.
  2. Tie every tag to a why—compliance, commercial, or routing—so it is obvious when a line is optional and when it is not.
  3. Name the owner of the list—who can add a value and who must approve a new bucket so the set does not creep into a copy of a copy of Excel.

How sites, tags, and scans connect

When every movement is tied to a known site and structured tags, where and what kind survive a re-org and a new depot opening next quarter.

Summary: Tags and locations together are what make scale possible without a new definition of site every time the estate grows a region or a hiring row appears in the P&L.
